Local History Collection

The collection of materials held within Heritage Services is referred to as the Local History Collection. This collection includes books, photographs and some sketches, maps, newsletters, annual reports, oral history interviews, local newspapers, genealogical references, microfiche and microfilm indexes, plus other ephemera which focus on the Midwest area. The Local History Collection also boasts an extensive Randolph Stow Collection.

Many of the items in the Local History Collection have restricted access. However, the Heritage Services staff are more than happy to assist customer enquiries. Please allow up to 3 days for retrieval of items.

Available for use at any time during Library opening hours are microfilm and microfiche readers, a study area, free internet searching and online access to the popular Ancestry database.

Assistance from Heritage Services staff is available by appointment.

Local History Information Sheets

Heritage Information Sheets about Geraldton and also various famous local people provide a broad overview of the history of our town.

Aboriginal History of Geraldton

The Library is proud to act as custodian for many resources relating to the Aboriginal history of Geraldton and surrounding areas.  In our Local Studies collection, there are oral histories, books, documents and photographs which are available for reference use in the Library.

Aerial photos of Geraldton taken in October 1952 provide an interesting view of how the town has changed over the years.

Sunshine Festival Programmes

Scanned copies of old Sunshine Festival Programmes (1959-2000) make for interesting reading.  Recent copies are kept in the Local Studies Collection.
