Published on Tuesday, 8 December 2020 at 9:15:00 AM

Long before Mahomets became a housing estate, the Geraldton Surf Life Saving Club was utilising Back Beach as its headquarters hence the building already constructed in the background of this image. The clubhouse constructed by C. T. Gibbings and Company was officially opened on 17 October 1970, only 40 short years following the club’s inception.

The Mahomets subdivision was in full swing by early 1977 with a land auction for fourteen multi-residential blocks taking place on 29 January. The auction was a success under the supervision of Auctioneers A. R. Masotto & Associates Pty Ltd and W. H. Dymond & Associates. Neville Thompson reported in the Geraldton Guardian that “all 14 lots were sold within 70 minutes”. Some of the local businesses involved in purchasing lots included Geraldton Building Company, Vintin Pty Ltd and Orange Suns Luxury Homes. The Stage 2 Auction was conducted from the back of a Ute on the 10 April 1977. This image of land being prepared for subdivision is believed to have been take around the same time.
