Snapshot - Cremorne Gardens

This image taken by local professional Photographer; Wallace Miller features the very quaint Cremorne Gardens which were located in the grounds of the Shamrock Hotel. The official opening took place on Saturday 22 December 1900. After seeing this image it is difficult to argue with the Geraldton Advertiser’s statement that “a more delightful spot than Crenmore could not be imagined”. It was reported to be the very first of its kind ever attempted in Geraldton.

Readers of the Geraldton Advertiser were further tempted to attend the opening with the additional description on top of the already high praise; “sown with grass, and is encompassed by a high trellis-work fence, over which creepers are being trained to grow. A pretty little stage has been erected, with a graceful proscenium, and a beautiful wall scene and sides. The whole will be lit by gas, incandescent burners being used.”

Opening night featured the Australian Trio who entertained with dancing, acting and singing. The Military Band were also engaged to play throughout the evening. It must have been an exciting event as it was advertised as far afield as the Murchison.

Is that a multi-tiered bird bath on the left?
