Geraldton Civic Centre
On the 24th of March 1963, Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Geraldton Civic Centre to the rapturous applause of hundreds of Geraldton locals. Since then, the building has seen many upgrades and refurbishments, as well as housing the Geraldton Regional Library for twenty-five years from 1968 to 1993, when it underwent renovations, before moving to Marine Terrace in 2010. After extensive renovations in 1988, Her Majesty, The Queen returned to re-open the building, and was welcomed by local woman Shannon Hanson, who was then four years old.
The Geraldton Civic Centre was built to replace the former municipal building, which had been in operation since 1897, and is now the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery. This was due to the town of Geraldton experiencing a population boom following World War II. The Civic Centre celebrated its 60-year anniversary on the 24th of March 2023. “As a policeman was telling I couldn’t go through, Prince Phillip saw me and told him it was OK and to let me and a couple of children pass,” she recalled. “I ran up to Queen Elizabeth and handed her flowers . . . she said ’thank you’.”
