Snapshot in Time - Geraldton Courthouse

Published on Thursday, 17 October 2024 at 10:54:22 AM

Geraldton’s first courthouse was opened in 1867 and stood on the corner of Gregory Street and Marine Terrace. The building received criticism for its location and suitability for purpose. When the new courthouse was built in 1898, the old building was utilised by the C.W.A and the Cubs and Scouts movement. During World War II, it served as a base for the Volunteer Air Observer Corps. At first the new building was home to various public offices such as the treasury, customs, lands and police, as well as courtrooms.

Even a building as large and grand as the new courthouse was not immune to judgement, however, with an article in the Geraldton Express of August 5th, 1989, stating that the “hideous fence of jarrah and chains in front of the building… neither useful nor ornamental… the present unsightly fence is an eyesore”. Today, the heritage listed building is used exclusively as Geraldton’s Courthouse.
