Leschenault Lady

The Leschenault Lady (G233) is a restored 2-6-0 G class Locomotive. When it first entered service on 13 November 1898, it spent several years operating as a main line locomotive on the principal Western Australian Government Railway network radiating from Perth. In 1909, G233 was one of five engines relocated to the Hopetoun-Ravensthorpe Railway to serve the goldfields there. It remained there until 1943, when the line was dismantled by WAGR, and G233 was dismantled, packed into crates and sent to Newdegate.

At the conclusion of WWII, the crates containing G233 were sent to Midland Railway Workshops, and the locomotive was reassembled. In 1973, matching grants from the WA government and the Australian Tourism Commission funded the restoration of G233 and carriages for her. A competition was held to choose a name for G233, which was won by Mark Hutchison of Bunbury Senior High School, and the locomotive was named Leschenault Lady. In 1979, the steam locomotive, Leschenault Lady, came to Geraldton and locals including the cubs and scouts of 1st Bluff Point Scouts Hall were treated to a ride on the old locomotive.
