Cray Tales Book Launch

In the mid 1990’s, author Annie de Monchaux decided that she wanted to document the Midwest crayfishing industry and the men and women involved. A world away from her native France, Annie found inspiring stories of resilience and a sub-culture inhabited by some fantastic characters, hard working men and women with a sense of humour and a taste for good times. From the old-timers to the young, bronzed Aussies earning their first wages, Annie recorded the stories of these Midwest working class heroes and their exploits.

There was big money to be made in the business which helped shape the town of Geraldton and many locals had a go at getting established in the industry. Some of their stories of success and failure are told in their own words in this book, and Geraldton locals will recognise many faces and names throughout the pages. In 2024, a new edition of Cray Tales was unveiled at a book launch which was attended by several of the characters whose stories were told in the book from twenty six years earlier. People can purchase a copy of Cray Tales by Annie de Monchaux at the Geraldton Regional Library.
