Nazareth House by Neville Thompson
Originally Nazareth House was built in the Geraldton suburb of Bluff Point to cater for elderly people and migrant children, but World War II prevented the children arriving until 1947. Planned by Monsignor John Hawes in 1939 and opened in 1941, the two-storey building is quadrangle, of Spanish design, with a central courtyard. On the southern side of the building a single-storey hostel was opened in October 1975 and followed in November 1994 by a nursing home to the northern side of the main building. Staged development estimated at $10.5 million began in 2003 to provide a 40-bed 3,000 square metre dementia specific building to eventually replace the 1957 facility and refurbish the southern section of the heritage listed main building, St Joseph’s.
