Commission of Elders Police Awards by Nola Gregory

The Murchison Gascoyne Commission of Elders Police Awards was a joint partnership between the Murchison Gascoyne Commission of Elders and the Wila Gutharra Aboriginal Community Development Program.

The Police Awards were designed to raise the level of recognition of Police Officers whose commitment and effort served to foster and improve relations between the Aboriginal Community and the Police Service.  The awards were based on the principles of equity and the Australian ethos of “A Fair Go”

Community members and community organisations were encouraged to nominate Police Officers for their services provided to the Aboriginal community of Geraldton, demonstrating consistent efforts to maintain and apply the principles of Equity and Justice and worked to improve Aboriginal and Police relations and enhance the progress of Reconciliation (Department of Aboriginal Affairs).

Nominations had to include a summary or statement of reasons as to why the Police Officer was being nominated for the awards and why they would make a worthy recipient (Department of Aboriginal Affairs).

Other photos of the Police Awards can be accessed through the Yamaji Yanda Collection which is held at the Geraldton Regional Library.

We encourage people to logon to the collection, have a look and help us to identify some of the people that we have not been able to identify in the photo.
